Mother's Milk Management System
The LacTrack application, used by nurses and nutritionists at the infant's bedside,
is comprised of a number of different modules.
Collection Module - Print Collect Labels
The Print Collect Labels module is used by nurses to generate the labels that will be
applied to the milk collection bottles in the hospital or at home by the mother. The nurse
is required to scan themselves, then the infant's identification barcode to print the
labels. These labels contain the complete demographic information of the baby in
eye-readable and barcode format. For enhanced tracking purposes, a unique bottle ID is
created for every label. Label generation for twins and triplets is also available.
Order Module - Order Milk, Formula, Additives
The Order Milk Products module is used by nurses, neonatologists or nutritionists to order
Mother's milk and formula (including all fortifiers and additives) electronically by
scanning the infant's identification and printing the order in eye-readable and barcode
formats on labels at the bedside. One label is attached to the chart, the other is sent
to the milk preparation area. Future developments include sending this order information
wirelessly or via cradle to the milk bank without printing labels.
Preparation Module - Print Feed Labels
The Print Feed Labels module is used by staff in the milk bank to print the labels for
the feeding vial by scanning the original collect label created in the first module and
then the order label created in the second module. The benefit of creating the Feed labels
is it ties the order to the patient and checks electronically to ensure we have the right
baby and the right order at the time of preparation.
Pickup Module - Retrieve the Right Milk
The Pickup module is used by nurses at the bedside to generate a label from the wristband
that can be brought to the milk bank to ensure the right milk is removed for the right
infant. Future developments include a kiosk application (LacTrack Courier) at the milk
bank refrigerators. The nurse would scan the pickup label then scan the milk vial feed
label to electronically check the right milk is being removed.
Begin Feed Module - Right Milk for the Right Baby
The Begin Feed module is at the heart of the LacTrack bedside application. It is used by
nurses at the bedside to ensure the right milk is being feed to the right infant. The
nurse scans the infant's wristband, then the feed label barcode. If the information does
not match, a warning is given.
End Feed Module - Record Volume Fed
The End Feed module is used to record the end time of the feed as well as information
such as volume fed and whether any milk was aspirated. This information can be printed
on labels for the infant's chart.
